Beyond The Surface Bonus Footage

Bonus Footage Of "Beyond The Surface" Film Presented By FREE-THEO Productions. Directed By Crystal Thornburg-Homcy & Dave Homcy. Edited By Tom Penna. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Ishita Malaviya, India's first female surfer, is joined by a unique and talented group of women – Crystal Thornburg-Homcy, Liz Clark, Lauren Hill, Emi Koch, and Kate Baldwin. With unshakable determination for a better world they traveled through Southern India documenting the ways in which surfing, yoga, and ecological creativity are bringing hope and fueling change for local people and the Planet. The saturated hues of India set the scene for this documentary that will touch upon eco-tourism, youth and women’s empowerment, biocentrism and personal growth. They have integrated these causes with the pursuit of India’s perfect waves, highlighting the undeniable power of surfing to bring joy amongst suffering. Documentary-style interviews with the local Indian community, filmed by award winning cinematographer, Dave Homcy, has captured this rare and inspiring endeavor with the goal of sharing these stories with the global surf community and beyond. Homcy is best know for critically acclaimed work in "Sliding Liberia", "Surfwise", "A Broke Down Melody", "El Mar Mi Alma", "Come Hell or High Water", "One Track Mind", "Shelter", and "Dear and Yonder". They intend to bring a spark of hope to the people they meet who face social disparity and suffering, and empower those without voices. All the while, they have discovered more about themselves, exchange life experiences and – through the medium of film – inspire others to seek a deeper connection to their fellow humans and to the wonder of nature. The group is teaming up with Beyond The Surface International. A Non-Profit organization whose mission is to use surfing as a highly effective tool to assimilate underprivileged, homeless and orphaned children into society. They have been able to strengthen and create communities to promote social justice and peace. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Music From EarthSync India, a record label and audio-visual production company, with a passion for music and unique collaborative projects. Shubha Mudgal | Ursula Rucker | Business Class Refugees No Stranger Here is inspired by the poetry of the 16th century Indian poet Kabir from the Bhakti Movement (500-1700 AD) that swept across India as a rebellion against religious orthodoxy, and caste distinctions, propagating peace, harmony and love - an ancient movement as relevant now as it was then. Expressed across time by lovers, artists, saints and devotees, humanity is no stranger to the search for higher ground, the ecstasy and pain of earthly or divine love, of being a stranger in a familiar world; seeking sublimation through artistic expression. With individual sensitivity, respect and deep artistic understanding of their own and different cultures, Shubha Mudgal, Ursula Rucker and Business Class Refugees come together in distinct diversity to unite with the timeless, spiritual voice of humanity.

Beautiful and graceful surfing from Crystal Thornburg-Homcy, Lauren Hill, Ishita Malaviya, and more from the film, Beyond The Surface.

The Involvement Dream x Oldfield

Patagonia Ambassador Belinda Baggs rides a surfboard designed in 1968 by fellow Patagonia Ambassador Wayne Lynch. This design came to Wayne in a dream and he called it the Involvement Model. It became the one board quiver that he rode around the world. Nearly forty five years later, Belinda explores what riding that surfboard feels like. When we look back at that time, we can see that in a few little hotbeds of surfboard design around the globe, boards were getting shorter, outlines were getting curvier, rails were coming down in volume, fins were getting sleeker and moving forward. Wayne Lynch’s Involvement Model is a classic example of these kind of transition era boards. So it’s interesting to me at least to see Belinda go back to this kind of transitional board four decades later and reinterpret it with a kind of postmodern retrospective, as a woman with her own rich heritage in Australian surfing; as a well-rounded quiver enthusiast familiar with both the longer & shorter ends of surfcraft; & of course as a world-class logger. I hope you enjoy the film.

Lovelace x Leopold

Ryan Lovelace at Glide Surf Co's glassing and shaping studio, The Heavens. This photograph was taken with black and white 35mm film. Black and white film is timeless, something that lends itself well to Ryan’s style of shaping. Noticeable dust marks were left unedited on the photos to recreate the feeling of the foam filled shaping bay. Hard working and driven, Ryan shaped some 50 boards during his 11 day visit to NJ. – Tim Leopold

Joni Sternbach: Tintype Book

Surf Site Tin Type is an homage to a sport, a way of life and to the people who practice it.  Over the last decade, Joni Sternbach has created portraits in tintype of contemporary surfers that put the world of surfing in a completely new light.  Stunning in their detail, these unique images evoke the romance of surfing and the strong individualism of the men and women who live to ride the waves.  Working with a large format camera and using hand-poured tintype plates, Sternbach has profiled a fascinating range of people on beaches around the world, from Malibu to Montauk to Byron Bay, Australia. Ramsey Dau: My Wave

"That’s what it feels like sometimes surfing in Southern California. It’s pretty rare to catch a good day with only a few people out. In fact, it can be tough to catch a bad day with only a few people out." Ramsey Dau is a Los Angeles-based artist and designer. He describes his creative process as “editing ” – taking the things that resonate with him, both positively and negatively, storing them in his brain, on post-its, and in notebooks, until they one day join together and come out on canvas or paper.  Ramsey's poster is available for purchase here.
