Gracias al Mar

Introducing Adrian Lopez, a stylish surfer and a unique character from the Moroccan surfing culture. With the influence of many other surfers and shapers, he started to shape his own boards trying to experience and find his own style. When he saw one of the longest swells of the decade approaching the coast of Morocco, he finished a couple of big fishes and drove south. The result, pure flow and connection.

J.J. Wessels x Takei

J.J. is a true master of traditional longboarding. When San Onofre or Doheny is fun, you can see him doing crazy hang ten, heels, and fin first. If Churches is firing, you will see J.J. riding a fish, mid length, or even finless with total control. Film by Tatsuo Takei.

Shed Sessions: San Clemente

Rather than allowing the surfers to run rampant in Eric "Bird" Huffman's San Diego shop – which has a collection of over 1200 vintage surfboards – They're letting Bird curate the quiver. Ian Crane, Nate Yeomans and Jett Schilling get paired them up with three very different surfboards that Bird picked specifically with San Clemente in mind: A three-inch thick single with a starfin, a Kolohe Andino grom-era thruster, and a classic performance twin fin.

McTavish Board Builders

Anyone who has surfed a McTavish surfboard - can feel the difference. That difference of a board underfoot that’s been built with love and years of expertise. It’s a feeling we value and why every single one of our surfboards begins with Bob or Ben McTavish and travels through seven more stands, (& seven pairs of expert hands), before making its way to you, wherever you are. Reflecting on another epic year with this team of makers & shapers, we wanted to pause, to celebrate them, and to honour their work with a dedicated apparel capsule inspired by this team of skilled builders. Because way before you reach the water, it all begins with them. Thank you guys for keeping the stoke alive! Available only at https://www.mctavish.com.au/collections/board-builders and in strictly limited numbers.

Handmade 2

On paper, shaping yourself a surfboard by hand would seem like a giant pain in the ass. Shaping bays are small, dusty, sweat-inducing spaces. Planer whirs are not anyone's preferred soundtrack. You'll make a lot of shit surfboards on your way to the first one that rides at all like you want it to.

Alex Knost, Ellis Ericson, Andrew Doheny and Shyama Buttonshaw star in this video produced by Surfer Magazine. They started their handshaping journeys many years ago. And amid all the clouds of foam dust they learned a thing or two about how their equipment works and what feelings they wanted to chase in their surfing.
